If you are new to our practice or it has been more than 2 years since you have seen a dentist for a check up (excluding emergency work), you will see a dentist to:
Routine check ups are no different, except, we may not take x-rays at every visit. Though our xrays are low radiation digital xrays, we take great care not to expose you to any unnecessary radiation. We also recommend these regular examinations to be with our hygienists, where you will see the hygienist for most of the appointment while a dentist will come in to do their own assessment. Two heads are better than one after all!
We may recommend a check up between every 4-12 months depending on your dental risk.
Intra-oral x-rays (checking small areas) may be recommended between 6-monthly and 3 years, based on risk and any pre-existing conditions or dental concerns. Extra-oral x-rays (checking full jaws) may be recommended 2-7 yearly.
There are countless medical conditions that can either affect dental health or presents with signs in the mouth.
Dental health can also aggravate or improve medical conditions, for example, poorly controlled diabetes has been shown to be linked to poor dental health and good dental health can help with diabetic control.
Another common medication condition is GORD/GERD (Reflux), which can cause significant tooth wear and if left untreated can increase the risk of throat cancer. Reflux has also been shown to be involved with patients that have sleep apnea!
